Located on an L-shaped site, this 131,600 square-foot project was part of an infill development along W. Northern Ave. between N. 19th and 21st Avenues in Phoenix. The site’s shape, coupled with parking requirements, limited the ability to provide direct-access units for customers while still allowing adjacent properties driveway access for their patrons. To solve this challenge, a drive-through loading area was developed traversing the east-west leg of the building. This climate-controlled, covered and secured thirty-foot-wide drive provides customers with all the benefits of direct-access units with the added benefits of being indoors. To accommodate all manner of moving vehicles, pickup trucks and SUVs, the drive-through has a fourteen-foot clear height throughout.
This raised the second floor up, creating taller units along each side – an added feature for the facility. The narrow north-south leg is anchored by a two-story rental office space which features a striking black metal-clad butterfly roof and red metal accents. The narrowness of this north-south leg also allows for a fair number of direct-access units to be incorporated along the secured access drive leading to the drive-through loading area. Multiple unique solutions were brought together for this project to provide customers with not only a quality facility, but also a facility that meets specific needs of the community.
